Is climate change getting out of control? What does this mean for the next generations?

Climate and environmental hazards have devastating impacts on the well-being and future of our children. Children's lives are under a huge threat due to climate change.

Nearly 170 million children live in countries at the highest risk of suffering the impact of climate change. Extreme events, including hurricanes, floods and wildfires, have become the new ordinary.

Hot temperatures, air pollution, and violent storms lead to detrimental life-threatening dangers for children, including malnutrition, difficult breathing and increased risk of infectious diseases.

Almost every child on earth is exposed to at least one of these climate hazards. Without urgent action, this number will increase.

STATISTICS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE AND CHILDREN

  • By 2050, an additional 24 million children are projected to be undernourished as a result of climate change.
  • By 2040, it is estimated that 1 in 4 children will be living in areas with detrimental water shortages.
  • Almost 160 million children are exposed to prolonged and severe droughts.
  • The education of around 38 million children is disrupted due to climate change per year.
  • Approximately 1 billion children are affected by climate change.
  • 2020 was the hottest year recorded.
  • Atmospheric climates were the highest they've ever been in at least 3.5 million years.

WHAT'S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW WITH CLIMATE CHANGE?

Some countries currently being affected by climate change:

  • Afghanistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Cambodia
  • Cote d'Ivoire
  • Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Fiji
  • Guatemala
  • Mozambique
  • South Sudan
  • Zimbabwe

In East and Southern Africa, an estimated 33 million people (including 16 million children) are in danger of not having enough food due to the climate crisis.

More than 3 million children are out of school in Somalia because of Covid-19, conflict, and climate shocks.

If we don't address the climate crisis right now, we risk realizing children's rights and the progress we've made for our future generations.
