We are surrounded by cellphone radiation at all times.  Do we even know what it does to us?

Do you let the youngest members of your family use your cell phone? Does your child spend long hours playing with your phone? Do you think it is harmless to give the mobile phone to your child? Yes? You may have to think twice about that.

Patrick Trzeciak, a 5th grade student from Sanders Memorial Elementary School, discusses these issues.

We live in a world were we couldn’t imagine day to day lives without the use of technology. We use the kitchen microwave, laptops, tablets and cellphones regularly. We cannot even imagine functioning without them.

Mobile phones have become a widespread phenomenon in the present time. These pocket-sized tools are just as powerful and useful as some of our desktops and laptops.  These mobile phones can do anything – from making a phone call to buying groceries and furniture online.

Adults are not the only ones dependent on these gadgets. Kids start their mobile gadget exposure as early as when they learned to sit and hold something with their hands. We let these kids play games and watch animated films using cellphones and tablets.

Do you know the potentially harmful effects of mobile phones on children?

There was a study that measured and showed the amount of radiation that the body gets when the phone is kept in the pocket all the time. The conclusion was that we should not keep our tech devices too close to our bodies. Imagine how much of our kids’ whole bodies are exposed to the radiation when holding a tablet or cellphone while sitting. Children with their sensitive and still developing skin, tissues and bones absorb more of these radiation from devices than adults do.

The WHO has classified cell phone radiation as ‘possibly carcinogenic to humans’. Children absorb more than 60 percent of the radiation into the brain than adults. Their brain’s thinner skin, tissues, and bones allow them to absorb the radiation twice more than adults. Their developing nervous system makes them more vulnerable to this ‘carcinogen’.

"The truth about mobile phone and wireless radiation: what we know, what we need to find out, and what you can do now"

This video captures the highlights of the lecture presented by Dr. Davis. There were a few findings that are worth knowing about:

  • In a study using mice, prenatally exposed newborn subjects displayed fewer cells in the hippocampus, the part of the brain that has to do with thinking and memory.
  • Prenatally exposed newborn mice have impaired memory and learning. The test subjects took 3x as long to find their way out of an experimental maze and made 2x as many errors.
  • Prenatally exposed newborn subjects display significant behavioural changes such as hyperactivity and anxiety.

There are no conclusive studies that support the direct claim that cellphones cause cancer or tumors. And there are several reasons for that. Some studies focused on adult lymphocytes while others analyze the effects on neural stem cells. Conclusive effects of the radiation from specific exposure could take long to establish. There is also the consideration for publication bias. Independent studies claim that there is an effect, while sponsored studies cannot establish conclusive evidence.

Whether cellphone radiation does or does not cause cancer, tumors in the brain or other neurological effects is not the main point here. Do you want to be the one to find out that it does have harmful effects to your child?

As parents, we must take preventive measures to minimize our child’s exposure to the potentially harmful effects of mobile devices. As they say, "prevention is better than cure."
